How can I describe the taste of UCC Blend 117 instant coffee?

You know how there's this really rare and delicious kind of coffee that is made from beans that have been fermented in the digestive tract of a civet cat? Well, UCC Blend 117 tastes like the manufacturers didn't bother to wait for the beans to drop.*

Mind you, UCC drip coffee tastes fantastic. But as far as instant goes, Japan's going to have to dig deep to top Mocha Kenya, Moccona Classic or Nescafe Gold. (There is a "Nescafe Gold Blend" available in Japan, but it's just not the same.)

*Pablo. That's what it tastes like. Pablo. Probably great for smuggling cocaine through Customs, but nobody in their right mind actually drinks the stuff.

I don't feel like the drip coffee machine was a waste of a Christmas present now--phew.

Matt enjoyed a UCC instant coffee bought from a convenience store while we were in Kyoto, and we searched to find it in jars in the supermarket. Alas, none could be found. However, UCC coffee designed for the drip coffee machine could be found in abundance.

Never slow to pick up on a Christmas gift opportunity, I decided the coffee machine and some UCC coffee was the perfect gift and promptly bought one for Matt. Happily he loved it and the drip coffee.

Yet, my smile quickly faded when on Christmas night Matt and I happened upon a store with not one but two different types of UCC instant coffee in jars. After two months of looking and the purchase of a rather expensive alternative, I have to say I was a little put out by the timing of the discovery.

So it does warm my heart that the instant stuff turned out to be crap.
